MotiveWave Review 2026: Honest Take From a Daily Order Flow Trader
I open MotiveWave every morning to trade ES, YM and RTY with order flow. Here's what I love about it, what bugs me, and who should pick something else.

I'm not affiliated with MotiveWave and I don't earn anything if you buy it. This is just the platform I use and pay for myself.
The short verdict
For order flow trading, MotiveWave is the best mix of features, looks and price I've used. It's extremely customizable, affordable, and you can own it outright with a lifetime license. The one real downside is speed when you push it hard with lots of charts and data.
What I like
- Really good customization, down to every bar and study setting
- Cheap for what you get
- Lifetime license option, so you can own it
- Java SDK to build your own indicators and tools
- Modern, clean and good looking
- Built-in trade copier
- Easy to set up sim accounts for testing
What I don't
- Can feel slow under heavy use
- Takes time to load data with a lot of charts and history
Why I Use MotiveWave
Every week someone asks me what platform I use, so I recorded my whole setup. My answer is MotiveWave, the Order Flow edition, with a Rithmic data feed. That combination gives me a full footprint chart setup for under $100 a month, and it's what I trade with every single morning.
I came to it for order flow, and I stayed because of how much I can shape it to the way I trade. Most platforms let you change colors and a few settings. MotiveWave lets you change almost everything.
What's Great About MotiveWave
Customization
This is the biggest one for me. I don't trade time-based bars for order flow, I trade point and figure bars, and MotiveWave lets me set that up exactly how I want: box size, reversal, display, spacing, everything. Range, tick, volume and Renko style bars are all in there too.
The order flow study, Volume Imprint, is just as flexible. Ladder or profile layout, delta fill, imbalances, candle totals, how many bars to keep in memory. You can build something very close to almost any footprint layout you've seen.
Price, and a lifetime license
MotiveWave is cheap for what it does. When I recorded my setup video, the Order Flow edition was $49 a month, and with Rithmic data on top I was under $100 a month in total. You can also buy a lifetime license instead of renting it. If you know you'll trade for years, owning your platform outright is a nice feeling, and usually cheaper in the long run.
A real SDK in Java
If you like to build things, MotiveWave has a proper SDK in Java for your own indicators, studies and tools. The SDK is great. You're not stuck waiting for someone to sell you an add-on, you can just write what you need.
Modern and pretty
It sounds shallow, but you stare at this screen for hours every day. MotiveWave looks modern and clean, and it's easy to make it look the way you want. A lot of trading software still looks like it was designed decades ago.
Trade copier and easy sim accounts
There's a built-in trade copier, which is useful if you trade several accounts, for example a few prop firm accounts at once. And setting up sim accounts for testing is easy, which matters more than people think. I test new ideas in sim before they get anywhere near real money, and I recommend every student does the same. If you're just starting, I also wrote about paper trading futures.
What Could Be Better
Speed under heavy use
This is my honest complaint. With a lot of charts open and a lot of order flow history loaded, MotiveWave can feel a bit slow, and it takes time to load data. On a normal setup with a few charts it's fine. But if you run a wall of charts on every market and want everything to snap instantly, you'll notice it.
A couple of things help: keep the number of bars in memory reasonable instead of loading months of footprint history, and only keep the charts open that you actually trade from.
One thing to check before switching
MotiveWave doesn't have the huge marketplace of third-party add-ons and the big community that the most popular platforms have. For me that doesn't matter, because the built-in order flow tools and the SDK cover everything. If you rely on a specific add-on from another platform, check before you switch.
My Full MotiveWave Order Flow Setup
Here's the whole build, step by step, plus a real trade review at the end:
The short version: MotiveWave Order Flow edition, Rithmic level 2 data, the Volume Imprint study with a ladder layout, "No bars" so the footprint replaces the candles, and point and figure bars with box size 1 and reversal 10 on ES. The full list of settings, and how I actually read the chart, is in my footprint chart guide.
MotiveWave vs NinjaTrader vs Sierra Chart
These are the three platforms futures order flow traders ask me about most. I use MotiveWave, so take this as my general impression of the other two rather than a deep review:
| MotiveWave | NinjaTrader | Sierra Chart | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look and feel | Modern and clean | Familiar, widely used | Old-school, functional |
| Custom code | Java SDK | C# (NinjaScript) | C++ |
| Strength | Customization and price | Huge community and add-ons | Speed and efficiency |
| Weak spot | Slower under heavy load | Best order flow tools cost extra | Steep learning curve |
If you want a modern, fully customizable order flow platform at a fair price, MotiveWave is the one I'd recommend. If raw speed with many charts is your top priority and you don't mind a dated interface, look at Sierra Chart. If you want the biggest community and add-on market, NinjaTrader. Prices and features change, so check each one's current site before you decide.
Who MotiveWave Is For (and Who It Isn't)
- Good fit: futures traders who want footprint charts and flexible bar types without paying a fortune, traders who like to tweak everything, and anyone who wants to code their own tools in Java.
- Good fit: traders running several accounts who want a trade copier built in.
- Maybe not: traders who run a huge number of charts at once and need everything instant on every tick.
- Maybe not: traders who depend on a specific third-party add-on that only exists on another platform.
And one honest note that applies to every platform. Software doesn't make anyone profitable. The best footprint setup in the world won't help without levels, a plan and proper risk management. Get the platform sorted once, then spend your energy on the trading.
